鉱物クリソベリルのうち変色性を示す非常に珍しい変種。

日光または蛍光灯の下では美しいグリーン、そしてランプやろうそくの炎などの白熱光の下では茶色がかった、もしくは紫がかった赤に変わります。 これは、この鉱物が複雑な方法で光を吸収するためです。

この劇的な色の変化は、時に「昼はエメラルド、夜はルビー」と表現されます。

この変化は現象自体が印象的なことから、「アレキサンドライト効果」と呼ばれます。

またアレキサンドライトは強い多色性を示す宝石でもあり、見る方向が変わると異なる色が見られます。 その多色性の３色は一般的に、緑、オレンジ、赤紫です。
